Calendar Girl

Last semester, I was part of the seventh annual Women for Change calendar. The theme was “Riveting Women” in honor of the late Mary Doyle Keefe, the model for Rosie the Riveter. She passed away in early 2015 at the age of 92. The image of Rosie the Riveter is iconic and we were lucky enough to have Mary Doyle Keefe’s daughter, Mary Ellen Keefe, in attendence at the calendar unveiling.

For my description in the calendar I wrote that I am, “a senior honors marketing major who works as an intern at Uhart’s study abroad office helping students travel to the country of their dreams”. We were asked to finish the statement, “I am riveting because…”. My picture was accompanied by the following paragraph for November:

“I am not afraid to take risks because I’m not afraid of failure or rejection. I am confident in myself and my abilities.  I love adventure and want to have as many new experiences as I can. I studied abroad in Australia at the University of Newcastle from and I came back from the amazing experience with a renewed sense of purpose and a strong desire for personal growth. I am confident that I will become a CEO with dedication, passion, and conscientiousness. I hope to encourage others to feel like they belong to a strong, supportive network of individuals bound for success.”

I was also featured in the calendar for being a part of the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team with a few of my teammates at one of our tournaments.

Women for Change partnered with the YWCA New Britain’s Sexual Assault Crisis Service  (SACS) which offers confidential assistance to survivors of sexual assault, a 24-hour crisis hotline, campus advocates, counselor advocate training, support groups, and other servicesThe Women for Change calendar costed $10, with 10% of all proceeds going to SACS.

At the calendar unveiling there were also boxes to collect clothing donations for SACS. SACS provides clothing for women who go to the hospital following a sexual assault because they are not allowed to leave with the clothes they came into the hospital with.

I am so proud to have been part of such a great calendar with such wonderful, riveting women for a good cause.
