Hawks Helping Hartford: Foodshare

Hawks Helping Hartford

My friend and I signed up for Hawks Helping Hartford last year in April. It is a program where students can choose from a variety of community service options around the community. The university provides us with transportation as well as a breakfast before we start. Also, they gave us these tye-dye shirts which, in hindsight, look very busy with the pants I was wearing, but we were there to do work, not make fashion statements 🙂 We chose to work with Foodshare.

Foodshare takes unsold groceries from supermarkets and they sort and send the food to various food shelters. We spent the afternoon preparing  boxes with labels and sorting meat into various categories: pork, beef, poultry, and other. However, there are some restrictions. Unlabeled or opened food was all thrown away. That’s pretty reasonable considering dietary restrictions, but I wish it didn’t have to go to waste. It was basically a conveyer belt style system with one to two volunteers at each designated section.

As a team, we packed and sorted over 1000 pounds of meat to give to people in need. A statistic I had almost forgotten until a volunteer from that day ran into me and asked, “Remember me? We packed 1000 pounds of meat together.” Needless to say, that is definitely on the list of strangest things anyone has ever said to me at a party. I plan on doing the Hawks Helping Hartford program or more community service again. It’s nice to be together with generous peers who like to help out.

Tell me, what community service project is your favorite or what would you like to do to help?
