This Friday is the start of rush week for Alpha Phi Omega. I pledged as a senior in the 2015 Fall Semester. I had honestly never heard of the organization until one day someone told me about the casino-night rush event; the rest is history. I wish I had heard about it sooner. It is a co-ed national service fraternity with wonderful opportunities to do community service and support great other causes.
Last year on October 25th, we did the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk. The tagline of the event which I thought was pretty clever was, “help us turn type one into type none.” JDRF is the largest non-government funder of Type 1 Diabetes research. In other words, the walk helps raise money for research and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.
The brothers of APO and I started walking just after it had stopped raining. Therefore, it was a little cold, but overall the group had fun. Most importantly, one of my favorite types of community service events are walks for medical research. For example, in high school I did Relay For Life three years in a row . Overall, anyone who is part of any clubs or organizations that are looking for a community service event, I highly recommend looking for a walk like this for members to participate in.
