Red Cross Blood Donation

On March 23, 2016, I donated blood to the Red Cross for the second time in college. I wanted to do it in high school, but there are specific restrictions and back then I wasn’t old enough, tall enough, or heavy enough.

Red Cross Procedures

First, I set an appointment, filled out a form with all my information, and then I had to take a basic physical. On my first donation they gave me a green sticker to wear. This meant I was a first-timer. They told me I had a faint pulse and he couldn’t hear it well enough to take my blood pressure. In other words, Someone else had to take a listen. Then they pricked my finger to see if my iron levels were good. It was a 14.8 and they said it was acceptable. I went through an online evaluation to see if I qualified to give blood and I did.

The Red Cross volunteer sterilized my arm, inserted the needle, but she missed the vein and had to adjust it. In about 8 minutes the bag was full. In other words, the blood was ready to be tested, distributed, and potentially save three lives. I had to stay a few extra minutes after donating to make sure I was okay. They provide snacks and drinks at the end of your donation.

I set another appointment shortly after before I left. As a bonus, we also got a free shirt and $5 gift card. I enjoyed giving blood because I support the cause and definitely am doing it again.

Be nice to me. I GAVE BLOOD TODAY.

Alpha Phi Omega JDRF Walk

This Friday is the start of rush week for Alpha Phi Omega. I  pledged as a senior in the 2015 Fall Semester. I had honestly never heard of the organization until one day someone told me about the casino-night rush event; the rest is history. I wish I had heard about it sooner. It is a co-ed national service fraternity with wonderful opportunities to do community service and support great other causes.

Alpha Phi Omega JDRF walk

Last year on October 25th, we did the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk. The tagline of the event which I thought was pretty clever was, “help us turn type one into type none.” JDRF is the largest non-government funder of Type 1 Diabetes research. In other words, the walk helps raise money for research and  awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.

The brothers of APO and I started walking just after it had stopped raining. Therefore, it was a little cold, but overall the group had fun. Most importantly, one of my favorite types of community service events are walks for medical research. For example, in high school I did Relay For Life three years in a row . Overall, anyone who is part of any clubs or organizations that are looking for a community service event, I highly recommend looking for a walk like this for members to participate in.

Additionally, see what I’m up to and tell me where I should go and what I should do next. Also, I’m very open-minded and open to new adventure / events suggestions. Email me at honeybunnytwee@gmail.com.

Women For Change: “Riveting Women” Calendar Unveiling 2015

I was part of the seventh annual Women for Change calendar. The theme was “Riveting Women” in honor of the late Mary Doyle Keefe, the model for Rosie the Riveter. She passed away in early 2015 at the age of 92. The image of Rosie the Riveter is iconic. Also, we were lucky enough to have Mary Doyle Keefe’s daughter, Mary Ellen Keefe, in attendence at the unveiling.

For my description in the calendar I wrote that I am, “a senior honors marketing major who works as an intern at Uhart’s study abroad office helping students travel to the country of their dreams”. We were asked to finish the statement, “I am riveting because…”. My picture was accompanied by the following paragraph for the month of November:

Also, I was featured for being a member of the University of Hartford’s Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team with a few of my teammates at one of our tournaments.

Charity: Part of the Proceeds Went Towards Sexual Assault Crisis Services

Women for Change partnered with the YWCA New Britain’s Sexual Assault Crisis Service  (SACS) which offers confidential assistance to survivors of sexual assault, a 24-hour crisis hotline, campus advocates, counselor advocate training, support groups, and other servicesThe Women for Change calendar costed $10, with 10% of all proceeds going to SACS.

At the unveiling there were also boxes to collect clothing donations for SACS. SACS provides clothing for women who go to the hospital following a sexual assault because they are not allowed to leave with the clothes they came into the hospital in.
